Design Build Process
Design / Build Process for a Japanese Tea House
Our client desired an oriental theme that was harmonious with the
rural, New England character surrounding it. The project began as a relatively small garden with stone walls, terraces, water
feature, spa and a screen house immediate to the guest house. As the project progressed, the screen house evolved into a four
season teahouse.
As a result, its size became disproportionate in relation to the
adjacent guest house. A light weight mock up was constructed that could be easily moved around the eighty acre property. This
gave us the opportunity to show the client the visual connection afforded by various locations.
The final resting place was a small peninsula on one of the four
ponds that grace the property.
Construction began immediately around the peninsula area. Interestingly,
the owner desired precise control of all the electronic aspects of the project. A state of the art, electronic switching system
was installed as a result.
The pau lope bridge and the boulders were located to provide a sense
of place, with views to key elements in the landscape. Low voltage lights were installed in the bridge and tea house. Different
lighting scenes can be created by the twenty-five, low voltage transformers and lighting zones. This can be accomplished with
an onsite computer or anywhere in the world via the Internet.
Visitors to the property find serenity and seclusion - rarely found
in today's fast paced world. However, computer and internet connections throughout the project ensure that the world of
technology is close at hand when desired.
